What are you ?
Are you living to work ? Or, Working to live ?
Some of the Software Engineers are living to work. They do not have any "Personal Life" of their own and don't recognize other's "Personal Life" as well.
They simply live for working alone. These guys work on weekends, holidays, most of the times 24 hrs on office.
For them "Life = Work." Most of them are bachelors. They don't enjoy themselves. They are, in a means, Addicted to Work - Workaholics.
These Workaholics not only spoil their lives, but others as well. Since, these guys are hyper-productive (with hyper-tension), they build up "Peer Pressure" for their colleagues.
Workaholics also ruin their health (both mental & physical).
Some tips to Workaholics:
1. Have some hobbies (Star/Bird Watching, Science Club, ...).
2. Read Books.
3. Have a weekend workout or visit gym.
4. Visit your parents.
5. Contribute to the society by free Tuition.
6. For god sake "Meditate".
7. Listen to Music.

10 Bulls

Chapter 01. The Search for the Bull
In the pasture of this world, I endlessly push aside the tall grasses in search of the bull.
Following unnamed rivers, lost upon the interpenetrating paths of distant mountains,
My strength failing and my vitality exhausted, I cannot find the bull.
I only hear the locusts chirring through the forest at night.
Comment: The bull never has been lost. What need is there to search? Only because of separation from my true nature, I fail to find him. In the confusion of the senses I lose even his tracks. Far from home, I see many crossroads, but which way is the right one I know not. Greed and fear, good and bad, entangle me.
Chapter 02. Discovering the Footprints
Along the riverbank under the trees, I discover footprints!
Even under the fragrant grass I see his prints.
Deep in remote mountains they are found.
These traces no more can be hidden than one's nose, looking heavenward.
Comment: Understanding the teaching, I see the footprints of the bull. Then I learn that, just as many utensils are made from one metal, so too are myriad entities made of the fabric of self. Unless I discriminate, how will I perceive the true from the untrue? Not yet having entered the gate, nevertheless I have discerned the path.
Chapter 03. Perceiving the Bull
I hear the song of the nightingale.
The sun is warm, the wind is mild, willows are green along the shore,
Here no bull can hide!
What artist can draw that massive head, those majestic horns?
Comment:When one hears the voice, one can sense its source. As soon as the six senses merge, the gate is entered. Wherever one enters one sees the head of the bull! This unity is like salt in water, like color in dyestuff. The slightest thing is not apart from self.
Chapter 04. Catching the Bull
I seize him with a terrific struggle.
His great will and power are inexhaustible.
He charges to the high plateau far above the cloud-mists,
Or in an impenetrable ravine he stands.
Comment:He dwelt in the forest a long time, but I caught him today! Infatuation for scenery interferes with his direction. Longing for sweeter grass, he wanders away. His mind still is stubborn and unbridled. If I wish him to submit, I must raise my whip.
Chapter 05. Taming the Bull
The whip and rope are necessary,
Else he might stray off down some dusty road.
Being well trained, he becomes naturally gentle.
Then, unfettered, he obeys his master.
Comment: When one thought arises, another thought follows. When the first thought springs from enlightenment, all subsequent thoughts are true. Through delusion, one makes everything untrue. Delusion is not caused by objectivity; it is the result of subjectivity. Hold the nose-ring tight and do not allow even a doubt.
Chapter 06. Riding the Bull Home
Mounting the bull, slowly I return homeward.
The voice of my flute intones through the evening.
Measuring with hand-beats the pulsating harmony, I direct the endless rhythm.
Whoever hears this melody will join me.
Comment: This struggle is over; gain and loss are assimilated. I sing the song of the village woodsman, and play the tunes of the children. Astride the bull, I observe the clouds above. Onward I go, no matter who may wish to call me back.
Chapter 07. The Bull Transcended
Astride the bull, I reach home.
I am serene. The bull too can rest.
The dawn has come. In blissful repose,
Within my thatched dwelling I have abandoned the whip and rope.
Comment: All is one law, not two. We only make the bull a temporary subject. It is as the relation of rabbit and trap, of fish and net. It is as gold and dross, or the moon emerging from a cloud.One path of clear light travels on throughout endless time.
Chapter 08. Both Bull and Self Transcended
Whip, rope, person, and bull -- all merge in No-Thing.
This heaven is so vast no message can stain it.
How may a snowflake exist in a raging fire?
Here are the footprints of the patriarchs.
Comment: Mediocrity is gone. Mind is clear of limitation. I seek no state of enlightenment. Neither do I remain where no enlightenment exists. Since I linger in neither condition, eyes cannot see me. If hundreds of birds strew my path with flowers, such praise would be meaningless.
Chapter 09. Reaching the Source
Too many steps have been taken returning to the root and the source.
Better to have been blind and deaf from the beginning!
Dwelling in one's true abode, unconcerned with that without --
The river flows tranquilly on and the flowers are red.
Comment: From the beginning, truth is clear. Poised in silence, I observe the forms of integration and disintegration. One who is not attached to "form" need not be "reformed." The water is emerald, the mountain is indigo, and I see that which is creating and that which is destroying.

Barefooted and naked of breast, I mingle with the people of the world.
My clothes are ragged and dust-laden, and I am ever blissful.
I use no magic to extend my life;
Now, before me, the dead trees become alive.
Comment: Inside my gate, a thousand sages do not know me. The beauty of my garden is invisible. Why should one search for the footprints of the patriarchs? I go to the market place with my wine bottle and return home with my staff. I visit the wineshop and the market, and everyone I look upon becomes enlightened.

Life Lessons
Learn one thing from a lion, one from a crane, four from a cock, five from a crow, six from a dog, and three from an ass.
The one excellent thing that can be learned from a lion is that whatever a man intends doing should be done by him with a whole-hearted and strenuous effort.
The wise man should restrain his senses like the crane and accomplish his purpose with due knowledge of his place, time and ability.

Stellarium
From my childhood days, I had interest in Astronomy. I don't know much of astrophysics. But I had a childish interest. It started from reading a book about Stars & Planets.
It was a Russian Book. In those days (my schooling days), we used to get lot of Russian Books in English as well as Tamil. I owned lot of such books. But, only 2 Books survived, one is "Man and Animals" and another one is "Animals on the Pedestals" (part-II of "Man and Animals").
I think I need to dedicate another posting for Russian Books alone. I want to talk much on Astronomy in this.
From my schooling days (when I was doing VIIth standard), I know how to spot the Orion's Belt, Ursa Major(Big Dipper or Big Bear) and Ursa Minor constellations in the night sky. I can even spot Venus, which is brighter than the brightest star.
My son Rohan is also very much interested in Astronomy. His interest started from the Day when I took him to visit Birla Planetarium in Chennai and watched the Star Show. He like the pictures of planets, constellations, galaxies and universe. He can identify Earth, Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn pictures in the Solar system.
I also used to play with Kstar software in Linux an year bank. But, Kstar was not able to quench my thirst of Astronomy.
Last week, I found a Free Open Source Software - "Stellarium". The features in it are astonishing, it gives you a geographical view of Planets & Constellations. If you want to spot a Planet or constellation in night sky, point monitor in the right direction. You will be able to plot the exact position of it the sky. You can install additional packages and get millions of stars. The software even have scripting through which it can play Solar Eclipses, Transits of Venus and lot more.
If you are interested in Astronomy, check out this software.
I'm planning to buy a telescope in the near future(in 1 or 2 years) and do more study on Astronomy. I also want to read more books on Astrophysics.

Muhammad bin Tughluq
Long time, no see...
Yesterday, I completed reading "Muhammad bin Tughluq" by Cho. It is the movie script, now available in print. Cho is great of the Political Satirist in Tamil. It is a really amazing reading. I'm not a reader of the Tughaq, though.
Political Satire don't comes handy for many writers. Many tried and burnt their fingers. But Cho is very good at it. I want to read more of his writings.
I have also completed reading The Gift: First book of Pellinor, I recommend it for all Fantasy Fans.
I'm currently put up in Bangalore for 6 months project.
I've started reading "Emperor's New Mind" by Roger Penrose, hope I will not switch to Terry Goodkind's Book Five: Soul of Fire, which is really tempting me. I have already completed four books in "The Sword of Truth" series.

An Answer to My Friend
People who view fantasy as second rate or childish are usually people who don't read or understand it. I like to tell them that good fantasy is social commentary combined with good storytelling - Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, the Oz stories and so many others. Sure, the stories take place in an imaginary world. But those worlds mirror our own and tell us things about ourselves that need to be said and understood. I also like to tell them how often other forms of literature use fantasy as the bedrock of their own stories. Fantasy transcends its own form in wider scope than any other type of writing.

Wisdom
To Err is Human,
To Re-Err is Foolish,
To Learn from Other's Err is Wisdom.
Two days before, my two-wheeler got punctured and I had to get office through other means of Transport. I was lucky for the first day, I had a colleague who used to commute through Share-Auto. We need to take 2 trips to reach our Office.
First, from Velachery Bus Terminal to SRP Bus-stop and then from SRP Bus-stop to our Office in Kottivakam. When we reached SRP Bus-stop, my colleague advised to cross the road across before getting a Share-Auto.
I questioned him, because there were lot of Share-Autos which are standing nearby. He told me that they will charge Rs.10 instead of Rs.5 if we cross the road. Blindly, I took his advice and we crossed the road and took a Share-Auto for Rs.5.
Yesterday, It was my turn to come to Office all alone. My laziness caught me, I took the Share-Auto which was nearby, rather than crossing the road. I was thinking that who will ask Rs.5 extra for just a 10 feet before.
But to my dismay, the Auto-walla charged me Rs.10 when I got down at my office.
This is one of the daily lessons which we learn from our own bad experiences and trial-and-error methods. There is no need for us to go through the same bad experience which already happened to others. We can learn from others. That is WISDOM !!!
But, we must scrutinize the authenticity for such information without bias.
Books are means of communicating the Mistakes done by oneself.

The Reader
Yesterday, I saw the film "The Reader" (Der Vorleser in Germany). It is one of good film. I recommend it. An wonderful performance by Kate Winslet. A strong storyline. The Music is also good. Note: the film is A-rated. I'm not surprised that she has won Oscar Award for her performance.
I kept my fingers crossed for Brad Pitt for his excellent performance in "The Curious case of Benjamin Button". But, I heard Sean Penn won it for "Milk". I feel very sorry for Brad Pitt.
I like both the movies "The Curious case of Benjamin Button" and "The Reader" very much. I recommend the movies, it is very good to watch. Far from the DISGUSTING "Slumdog Millionarie".
The another Movie, I watched over in this weekend is "The Man who know too much". It is an Alfred Hitchcock Film. Every Hitchcock Movie watch makes me like him more and more. He is the Brilliant Director in last century, who in the world could make you to sit and watch a 90 mins drama which happens only inside a "Single Room".
Last but not least, I have completed "The Blood of the Fold" by Terry Goodkind. The Wizard's Third Rule:
"Passion Rules Reason."
Letting your emotions control your reason may cause trouble for yourself and those around you. (thanks to wiki)

Dynamic Load Library - Linux
Have you ever wondered, how to load, link and execute library functions when it is needed and unload it after it is used in Linux.
libdl - Library gives you this opportunity. For example:
* If you are writing an application which makes use of XML Parsing Library sparingly. You may want to load this XML Library when there is need and unload it afterwards.
* Or, you may want to load choose a particular library depending on the runtime parameters of an application.
libdl comes in handy, with only 3 interfaces with in the library. The following functions are defined in "dlfcn.h".
* dlopen - gain access to an executable object file
* dlsym - obtain the address of a symbol from a dlopen object
* dlclose - close a dlopen object
* dlerror - dlerror - get diagnostic information
Don't forget to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Now, Comes the Intellect

Art is not something which a bunch of bureaucrats discussing about an absurd Novel over a cocktail party, which they are struggling to read themselves.
Now-a-days, Art has become like that. These people will carry "Ulysses" by James Joyce, wherever they go. These people just try to showoff, but in the darkness they know what they are. I will tell you the truth, if you want to really read "Ulysses" by James Joyce, first of all buy a "Oxford Dictionary", memorize all the words in it before you start reading it. You will find all the word from Dictionary in it, for unknown reason.
These people will say that "Slumdog Millionaire" is an artistic film. I will reason with you, what do you think is a "Film" ? I will say it is the Storyline. In this film, the Artist who created it shows his "Metaphysical Value-Judgments".
Come on, will you watch a Computer Graphics Show for 1.5 hours and screen it in Theaters because it has complex arithmetics and Mandelbrot sets.
As for me, Art is a Michelangelo Picture, Bharatanatyam, Music, Concerts, Sculptures, etc... which I can feel, which I can understand, which is clear. All these things have a Grammars, Rules, Structures.
Understand me, you also write Novels by playing with Grammars, Rules and Structures, but saying nothing clearly. It is what some of the Novels now-a-days do. They think it is intellectual. Actually, they don't know it is always the other way around, Grammars, Rules and Structures are for making things clear, not to perplex.
It is not like I need to look into some absurd perplexing picture, so called "Modern Art" and come to my own conclusion. The picture will be a real chaos. Nobody knows what was in the mind of the Artist who created it. It maybe some sort of his "Practical Jokes", he might have created it to fool people, generation by generation.

Umberto Eco
I was first introduced to Umberto Eco when I was in IMSc, for my final year project. I started with "Foucault's Pendulum", I became his fan. I don't whether I chose my Novels or they chose me. Usually the Books chose me. It will come straight to my hand when I need it.
Last weekend I saw Movie "The Name of the Rose" made from the book of the same name by Umberto Eco. The movie is fantastic. Starring Sean Connery and Christian Slater, don't mind if you couldn't, it is an 1986 film.
I have completed reading "The Stone of Tears" by Terry Goodkind today. The last 200 pages are very addictive, I couldn't leave it. It a page turner. I promised myself that I will not read it, until I complete Robert Jordon's "Eye of the World" but I couldn't resist.
I wish you all "Happy New Year - 2009".
