Stronger than the problems

Do not seek to be free of the problems. Work to be stronger than the problems.

A life with no problems would be a life with no opportunities for growth or achievement. That’s not what you want, and it is certainly not realistic.

In the real world there are difficult problems, and there will always be. Yet there are also countless possibilities for progress and true fulfillment.

Don’t waste your time fantasizing about a life free of problems. Instead, use your imagination and your efforts to transform those problems into positive value.

Embrace each situation as it is, along with all the problems. Accept that the problems exist, and you can then begin to successfully work through them.

Life will always be challenging in one way or another. So rise to the challenges and use your unique set of abilities to make life great.

One Day At A Time - Philosophy

Sometimes when I feel lost in this world full of distractions, there is a single quote which will bring me to my senses. And those words are:

"One Day At A Time."

Living one day at time is a very simple philosophy. Sometimes worries and anxiety creeps and fogs your mind, in much moments repeat yourself the quote.

I could still hear one of the favorite quotes from favorite School Teacher Oscar-sir, who used to say "One Donkey At A Time" when the class is almost in a chaos.

Mariah Carey - Hero (Awesome)

There is Hero - best motivational song I have ever heard.
Lyrics:

Hero

There's a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
Of what you are

There's an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

It's a long road
And you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold

You can find love
If you search within yourself
And the emptiness you felt
Will disappear

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

Oh ho, Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don't let anyone
Tear them away, hey yea

Hold on
There will be tomorrow
In time, you find the way, hey

Then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

That a hero lies in you
Mmm, that a hero lies in you

Marcus Aurelius - Meditation

Do you want peace of mind and relieve your self from Anxiety, read the following passage from Meditations by Marcus Aurelius:

Do not disturb yourself by picturing your life as a whole; do not assemble in your mind the many and varied troubles which have come to you in the past and will come again in the future, but ask yourself with regard to every present difficulty: 'What is there in this that is unbearable and beyond endurance?' You would be ashamed to confess it!

And then remind yourself that it is not the future or what has passed that afflicts you, but always the present, and the power of this is much diminished if you take it in isolation and call your mind to task if it thinks that it cannot stand up to it when taken on its own.

'What is there in this that is unbearable and beyond endurance?'

Very Long Time

After a very long time, I'm back again. It is not the setbacks which is a serious problem to Man, it is how much time you take to comeback.

In my childhood days, I seriously envied one of my school friend (Manibalan), whose Grandfather left him a library of 200+ books. Now, I own a very library (my own library) which I dreamed of owning in my childhood days. My collection has 500+ books.

But, I don't have time to read all the books. Without reading it, these books are as good as not owning it.

I need to have a plan to work on it. I will read at least:
* 1 Self Help Book
* 1 - Popular Science Book
* 1 - Technical Book

in 2 Months.

This Month Reading List:
* Sophie's World - Jostein Gaarder
* Practice of Programming - Brian Kernighan & Rob Pike

"Little by little, one can conquer heaven."

Faith of the Fallen

Long time, no see. After a very long time, I'm blogging again.

I couldn't read much in these days. The Last novel I completed reading was 2 months back. It was the sixth installment Terry Goodkind, Richard & Kahlan's Series.

Every Goodkind's book had a problem and a magical solution which Richard will try to find it out. But, in this book the author uses Ayn Rand's "magic". I love the book.

So, Wizard's Sixth Rule:
"The only sovereign you can allow to rule you is reason."

The best quote of the book is "Your life is yours alone, rise up and live it."

Currently Reading "Miss Marple Omnibus-1" by Agatha Christie.

Run Any OS on Your PC

You can run (virtually) any operating systems like Linux (Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS), FreeBSD in your Windows PC. For the last few days, I was evaluating Oracle's VirtualBox. The good news is, it is available for free and available under GPL.

There is no pain of partitioning your disk, disk corruption, etc. VirtualBox is an amazing solutions for Multi-OS lovers like me.

You can install any Operating System in your PC with the following steps:
1. Download VirtualBox
2. Download the VMware Image
3. Add the VMware Image into your VirtualBox
4. Tweak the memory, hard-disk, network, and display
5. Your Operating System is ready for use as an application

Post me any question on troubleshooting VirtualBox, I will try to answer them.

To Think About

I read it just now, I just got inspired by the depth of this Message. This Message is from "Evan Almighty".

If Someone prays to God for more Patience, what do you think God will give him.

Patience or Opportunity to be more Patient.

If Someone prays to God for more Courage, what do you think God will give him.

Courage or Opportunity to be more Courageous.

If Someone prays to God for more Family Love, what do you think God will give him.

Warm Love Feeling or Opportunity to be Love each other.

Remember God don't give you Hurdles, they are "Stepping Stones" disguised as Hurdles.

Lost On Moon

I was attending a Team Building Training a month back, one of the exercise we have to do is to prioritize a list of things for survival when you are "Lost On Moon".

I have listed below some of the items in the list:
* Signal flares
* Parachute silk
* Food concentrate
* Box of matches
* Stellar map (of the moon’s constellations)
* Oxygen Tank, etc ...

This has to be a group activity. Once we sorted out the priority, the trainer showed us the results and the reason for those result.

It is a great eye opener exercise, because whatever we considered useless "On Moon", was indeed very useful from an other perspective.

Today, I was thinking to myself, we have some "Strengths and Weakness" within ourselves. We are been given "Things for Survival", when we are "Lost On Earth" for a whole life. It is the perception we have on life makes us to decide on the priority of the things we need for "Survival" or Living.

Buddha's Teachings

If I recommend one book for everyone in the world, it is "The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching" by Thich Nhat Hanh. Nobody would have done better than Thich Nhat Hanh of writing about Buddha's Teachings.

The book is very elegant and very simple to understand. He starts the book by "Buddha is not god."

There are two great teachers who came into this world to teach all human beings "How to live ?" They laid the principles to practice righteous living. They traveled around places and made disciples to spread their teaching.

But, You know what people did as time passed by. They made these teachers into "GODS." Worshiped them, but they forget all their teachings. They kept on going in the treacherous path of wrong living.

I could recall a story I read long back:

There was a Man who came from heaven to earth, to teach all men and women "How to make fire." The Man went from village to village to teach them about how to make fire. He gave they tools to make fire.

After sometime, some people don't like him, they stoned him to death.

As years passed by Temples and Churches are build for that Man. You know what people did ? In the high alter of the temple, they placed the Tools used by the Man and began to worship it, but they never used the Tools to make Fire.

It is the same case happened to these Divine Teachers.

There was a old saying, I forgot where I read it:

"If you want to read a Book which is not available, then it is your duty to write it."

I apply the same to this blog. It will be want I wanted it to be. Here after, I will be posting all programming related blog posts in the new blog. I believe some people will happy to hear this.

Wizard's Fifth Rule

"Mind what people do, not only what they say, for deeds will betray a lie." - Wizard's Fifth Rule.

After a longtime, last weekend I completed reading "Soul of the Fire" - Fifth part of Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind. I'm currently reading "Code Complete" by Steve Mcconnell.

"Metaphor" is a figure of speech concisely expressed by an implied analogy between two objects or ideas, conveyed by the use of a word instead of another.

The closest Metaphor for "Software Development" is Construction.

Confessions of an Ex-Workaholics

What are you ?

Are you living to work ? Or, Working to live ?

Some of the Software Engineers are living to work. They do not have any "Personal Life" of their own and don't recognize other's "Personal Life" as well.

They simply live for working alone. These guys work on weekends, holidays, most of the times 24 hrs on office.

For them "Life = Work." Most of them are bachelors. They don't enjoy themselves. They are, in a means, Addicted to Work - Workaholics.

These Workaholics not only spoil their lives, but others as well. Since, these guys are hyper-productive (with hyper-tension), they build up "Peer Pressure" for their colleagues.

Workaholics also ruin their health (both mental & physical).

Some tips to Workaholics:
1. Have some hobbies (Star/Bird Watching, Science Club, ...).
2. Read Books.
3. Have a weekend workout or visit gym.
4. Visit your parents.
5. Contribute to the society by free Tuition.
6. For god sake "Meditate".
7. Listen to Music.

10 Bulls

Courtesy: Zenguide

Chapter 01. The Search for the Bull

In the pasture of this world, I endlessly push aside the tall grasses in search of the bull.
Following unnamed rivers, lost upon the interpenetrating paths of distant mountains,
My strength failing and my vitality exhausted, I cannot find the bull.
I only hear the locusts chirring through the forest at night.

Comment: The bull never has been lost. What need is there to search? Only because of separation from my true nature, I fail to find him. In the confusion of the senses I lose even his tracks. Far from home, I see many crossroads, but which way is the right one I know not. Greed and fear, good and bad, entangle me.

Chapter 02. Discovering the Footprints

Along the riverbank under the trees, I discover footprints!
Even under the fragrant grass I see his prints.
Deep in remote mountains they are found.
These traces no more can be hidden than one's nose, looking heavenward.

Comment: Understanding the teaching, I see the footprints of the bull. Then I learn that, just as many utensils are made from one metal, so too are myriad entities made of the fabric of self. Unless I discriminate, how will I perceive the true from the untrue? Not yet having entered the gate, nevertheless I have discerned the path.

Chapter 03. Perceiving the Bull

I hear the song of the nightingale.
The sun is warm, the wind is mild, willows are green along the shore,
Here no bull can hide!
What artist can draw that massive head, those majestic horns?

Comment:When one hears the voice, one can sense its source. As soon as the six senses merge, the gate is entered. Wherever one enters one sees the head of the bull! This unity is like salt in water, like color in dyestuff. The slightest thing is not apart from self.

Chapter 04. Catching the Bull

I seize him with a terrific struggle.
His great will and power are inexhaustible.
He charges to the high plateau far above the cloud-mists,
Or in an impenetrable ravine he stands.

Comment:He dwelt in the forest a long time, but I caught him today! Infatuation for scenery interferes with his direction. Longing for sweeter grass, he wanders away. His mind still is stubborn and unbridled. If I wish him to submit, I must raise my whip.

Chapter 05. Taming the Bull

The whip and rope are necessary,
Else he might stray off down some dusty road.
Being well trained, he becomes naturally gentle.
Then, unfettered, he obeys his master.

Comment: When one thought arises, another thought follows. When the first thought springs from enlightenment, all subsequent thoughts are true. Through delusion, one makes everything untrue. Delusion is not caused by objectivity; it is the result of subjectivity. Hold the nose-ring tight and do not allow even a doubt.

Chapter 06. Riding the Bull Home

Mounting the bull, slowly I return homeward.
The voice of my flute intones through the evening.
Measuring with hand-beats the pulsating harmony, I direct the endless rhythm.
Whoever hears this melody will join me.

Comment: This struggle is over; gain and loss are assimilated. I sing the song of the village woodsman, and play the tunes of the children. Astride the bull, I observe the clouds above. Onward I go, no matter who may wish to call me back.

Chapter 07. The Bull Transcended

Astride the bull, I reach home.
I am serene. The bull too can rest.
The dawn has come. In blissful repose,
Within my thatched dwelling I have abandoned the whip and rope.

Comment: All is one law, not two. We only make the bull a temporary subject. It is as the relation of rabbit and trap, of fish and net. It is as gold and dross, or the moon emerging from a cloud.One path of clear light travels on throughout endless time.

Chapter 08. Both Bull and Self Transcended

Whip, rope, person, and bull -- all merge in No-Thing.
This heaven is so vast no message can stain it.
How may a snowflake exist in a raging fire?
Here are the footprints of the patriarchs.

Comment: Mediocrity is gone. Mind is clear of limitation. I seek no state of enlightenment. Neither do I remain where no enlightenment exists. Since I linger in neither condition, eyes cannot see me. If hundreds of birds strew my path with flowers, such praise would be meaningless.

Chapter 09. Reaching the Source

Too many steps have been taken returning to the root and the source.
Better to have been blind and deaf from the beginning!
Dwelling in one's true abode, unconcerned with that without --
The river flows tranquilly on and the flowers are red.

Comment: From the beginning, truth is clear. Poised in silence, I observe the forms of integration and disintegration. One who is not attached to "form" need not be "reformed." The water is emerald, the mountain is indigo, and I see that which is creating and that which is destroying.

Chapter 10. In the World

Barefooted and naked of breast, I mingle with the people of the world.
My clothes are ragged and dust-laden, and I am ever blissful.
I use no magic to extend my life;
Now, before me, the dead trees become alive.

Comment: Inside my gate, a thousand sages do not know me. The beauty of my garden is invisible. Why should one search for the footprints of the patriarchs? I go to the market place with my wine bottle and return home with my staff. I visit the wineshop and the market, and everyone I look upon becomes enlightened.

Life Lessons

Learn one thing from a lion, one from a crane, four from a cock, five from a crow, six from a dog, and three from an ass.

The one excellent thing that can be learned from a lion is that whatever a man intends doing should be done by him with a whole-hearted and strenuous effort.

The wise man should restrain his senses like the crane and accomplish his purpose with due knowledge of his place, time and ability.

To wake at the proper time; to take a bold stand and fight; to make a fair division (of property) among relations; and to earn one's own bread by personal exertion are the four excellent things to be learned from a cock.

Union in privacy (with one's wife); boldness; storing away useful items; watchfulness; and not easily trusting others; these five things are to be learned from a crow.

Contentment with little or nothing to eat although one may have a great appetite; to awaken instantly although one may be in a deep slumber; unflinching devotion to the master; the ability to eat a lot; the ability to fall asleep easily; and bravery; these six qualities should be learned from the dog.

Although an ass is tired, he continues to carry his burden; he is unmindful of cold and heat; and he is always contented; these three things should be learned from the ass.

Evacuee ...(Mother)

Each time on my leaving home
I run back to my mother's arms,
one last hold and then it's over.

Watching me, you know I cry,
you wave a kiss to say goodbye,
Feel the sky fall down upon me!

All I am,
a child with promises
All I have
are miles full of promises of home.

If only I could stay with you,
my train moves on, you're gone from view,
Now I must wait until it's over.

All I am,
a child with promises
All I have
are miles full of promises of home

Days will pass, your words to me,
it seems so long; eternity,
but I must wait until it's over.

Stellarium

From my childhood days, I had interest in Astronomy. I don't know much of astrophysics. But I had a childish interest. It started from reading a book about Stars & Planets.

It was a Russian Book. In those days (my schooling days), we used to get lot of Russian Books in English as well as Tamil. I owned lot of such books. But, only 2 Books survived, one is "Man and Animals" and another one is "Animals on the Pedestals" (part-II of "Man and Animals").

I think I need to dedicate another posting for Russian Books alone. I want to talk much on Astronomy in this.

From my schooling days (when I was doing VIIth standard), I know how to spot the Orion's Belt, Ursa Major(Big Dipper or Big Bear) and Ursa Minor constellations in the night sky. I can even spot Venus, which is brighter than the brightest star.

My son Rohan is also very much interested in Astronomy. His interest started from the Day when I took him to visit Birla Planetarium in Chennai and watched the Star Show. He like the pictures of planets, constellations, galaxies and universe. He can identify Earth, Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn pictures in the Solar system.

I also used to play with Kstar software in Linux an year bank. But, Kstar was not able to quench my thirst of Astronomy.

Last week, I found a Free Open Source Software - "Stellarium". The features in it are astonishing, it gives you a geographical view of Planets & Constellations. If you want to spot a Planet or constellation in night sky, point monitor in the right direction. You will be able to plot the exact position of it the sky. You can install additional packages and get millions of stars. The software even have scripting through which it can play Solar Eclipses, Transits of Venus and lot more.

If you are interested in Astronomy, check out this software.

I'm planning to buy a telescope in the near future(in 1 or 2 years) and do more study on Astronomy. I also want to read more books on Astrophysics.

Muhammad bin Tughluq

Long time, no see...

Yesterday, I completed reading "Muhammad bin Tughluq" by Cho. It is the movie script, now available in print. Cho is great of the Political Satirist in Tamil. It is a really amazing reading. I'm not a reader of the Tughaq, though.

Political Satire don't comes handy for many writers. Many tried and burnt their fingers. But Cho is very good at it. I want to read more of his writings.

I have also completed reading The Gift: First book of Pellinor, I recommend it for all Fantasy Fans.

I'm currently put up in Bangalore for 6 months project.

I've started reading "Emperor's New Mind" by Roger Penrose, hope I will not switch to Terry Goodkind's Book Five: Soul of Fire, which is really tempting me. I have already completed four books in "The Sword of Truth" series.

An Answer to My Friend

People who view fantasy as second rate or childish are usually people who don't read or understand it. I like to tell them that good fantasy is social commentary combined with good storytelling - Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, the Oz stories and so many others. Sure, the stories take place in an imaginary world. But those worlds mirror our own and tell us things about ourselves that need to be said and understood. I also like to tell them how often other forms of literature use fantasy as the bedrock of their own stories. Fantasy transcends its own form in wider scope than any other type of writing.

Wisdom

To Err is Human,
To Re-Err is Foolish,
To Learn from Other's Err is Wisdom.

Two days before, my two-wheeler got punctured and I had to get office through other means of Transport. I was lucky for the first day, I had a colleague who used to commute through Share-Auto. We need to take 2 trips to reach our Office.

First, from Velachery Bus Terminal to SRP Bus-stop and then from SRP Bus-stop to our Office in Kottivakam. When we reached SRP Bus-stop, my colleague advised to cross the road across before getting a Share-Auto.

I questioned him, because there were lot of Share-Autos which are standing nearby. He told me that they will charge Rs.10 instead of Rs.5 if we cross the road. Blindly, I took his advice and we crossed the road and took a Share-Auto for Rs.5.

Yesterday, It was my turn to come to Office all alone. My laziness caught me, I took the Share-Auto which was nearby, rather than crossing the road. I was thinking that who will ask Rs.5 extra for just a 10 feet before.

But to my dismay, the Auto-walla charged me Rs.10 when I got down at my office.

This is one of the daily lessons which we learn from our own bad experiences and trial-and-error methods. There is no need for us to go through the same bad experience which already happened to others. We can learn from others. That is WISDOM !!!

But, we must scrutinize the authenticity for such information without bias.

Books are means of communicating the Mistakes done by oneself.

How did Danny Boyle ???

How did Danny Boyle got Academy Award for "Slumdog Millionaire"?

A) It is a Good Movie with best performance, - NO
B) It is an Artistic Movie, - NAY
C) He's a Genius, - Of course, NOT
...
D) It is Written - Yes (it is fate...)

Guruji Vasudev

Recently, I'm ready books by Guruji Vasudev (not Jaggi Vasudev). It is published by Sixth Sense Publication. I bought them at "Permanent Book Fair", Kannimara Library with 10% discount.

Some of the books are:
* Tao de Ching (Cheena Kathigal - Chinese Stories)
* Sufi Kathigal
* Think Differently (Marupattu Sinthiyungal)
* Zen Kathigal

I'm currently reading "Sufi Kathigal".

The Reader

Yesterday, I saw the film "The Reader" (Der Vorleser in Germany). It is one of good film. I recommend it. An wonderful performance by Kate Winslet. A strong storyline. The Music is also good. Note: the film is A-rated. I'm not surprised that she has won Oscar Award for her performance.

I kept my fingers crossed for Brad Pitt for his excellent performance in "The Curious case of Benjamin Button". But, I heard Sean Penn won it for "Milk". I feel very sorry for Brad Pitt.

I like both the movies "The Curious case of Benjamin Button" and "The Reader" very much. I recommend the movies, it is very good to watch. Far from the DISGUSTING "Slumdog Millionarie".

The another Movie, I watched over in this weekend is "The Man who know too much". It is an Alfred Hitchcock Film. Every Hitchcock Movie watch makes me like him more and more. He is the Brilliant Director in last century, who in the world could make you to sit and watch a 90 mins drama which happens only inside a "Single Room".

Last but not least, I have completed "The Blood of the Fold" by Terry Goodkind. The Wizard's Third Rule:

"Passion Rules Reason."

Letting your emotions control your reason may cause trouble for yourself and those around you. (thanks to wiki)

Dynamic Load Library - Linux

Have you ever wondered, how to load, link and execute library functions when it is needed and unload it after it is used in Linux.

libdl - Library gives you this opportunity. For example:

* If you are writing an application which makes use of XML Parsing Library sparingly. You may want to load this XML Library when there is need and unload it afterwards.
* Or, you may want to load choose a particular library depending on the runtime parameters of an application.

libdl comes in handy, with only 3 interfaces with in the library. The following functions are defined in "dlfcn.h".

* dlopen - gain access to an executable object file
* dlsym - obtain the address of a symbol from a dlopen object
* dlclose - close a dlopen object
* dlerror - dlerror - get diagnostic information

void *handle;
int *iptr, (*fptr)(int);

/* open the needed object */
handle = dlopen("/usr/home/me/libfoo.so", RTLD_LOCAL | RTLD_LAZY);

/* find the address of function and data objects */
*(void **)(&fptr) = dlsym(handle, "my_function");
iptr = (int *)dlsym(handle, "my_object");

/* invoke function, passing value of integer as a parameter */
(*fptr)(*iptr);

Don't forget to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Now, Comes the Intellect

"Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist’s metaphysical value-judgments." - Ayn Rand.

Art is not something which a bunch of bureaucrats discussing about an absurd Novel over a cocktail party, which they are struggling to read themselves.

Now-a-days, Art has become like that. These people will carry "Ulysses" by James Joyce, wherever they go. These people just try to showoff, but in the darkness they know what they are. I will tell you the truth, if you want to really read "Ulysses" by James Joyce, first of all buy a "Oxford Dictionary", memorize all the words in it before you start reading it. You will find all the word from Dictionary in it, for unknown reason.

These people will say that "Slumdog Millionaire" is an artistic film. I will reason with you, what do you think is a "Film" ? I will say it is the Storyline. In this film, the Artist who created it shows his "Metaphysical Value-Judgments".

Come on, will you watch a Computer Graphics Show for 1.5 hours and screen it in Theaters because it has complex arithmetics and Mandelbrot sets.

As for me, Art is a Michelangelo Picture, Bharatanatyam, Music, Concerts, Sculptures, etc... which I can feel, which I can understand, which is clear. All these things have a Grammars, Rules, Structures.

Understand me, you also write Novels by playing with Grammars, Rules and Structures, but saying nothing clearly. It is what some of the Novels now-a-days do. They think it is intellectual. Actually, they don't know it is always the other way around, Grammars, Rules and Structures are for making things clear, not to perplex.

It is not like I need to look into some absurd perplexing picture, so called "Modern Art" and come to my own conclusion. The picture will be a real chaos. Nobody knows what was in the mind of the Artist who created it. It maybe some sort of his "Practical Jokes", he might have created it to fool people, generation by generation.

Umberto Eco

I was first introduced to Umberto Eco when I was in IMSc, for my final year project. I started with "Foucault's Pendulum", I became his fan. I don't whether I chose my Novels or they chose me. Usually the Books chose me. It will come straight to my hand when I need it.

Last weekend I saw Movie "The Name of the Rose" made from the book of the same name by Umberto Eco. The movie is fantastic. Starring Sean Connery and Christian Slater, don't mind if you couldn't, it is an 1986 film.

I have completed reading "The Stone of Tears" by Terry Goodkind today. The last 200 pages are very addictive, I couldn't leave it. It a page turner. I promised myself that I will not read it, until I complete Robert Jordon's "Eye of the World" but I couldn't resist.

I wish you all "Happy New Year - 2009".

"We are what we are, neither more nor less" - Terry Goodkind.
"People are stupid. They will believe what they want to believe" - Wizard's First Rule.
"The greatest harm can result from the best intentions." - Wizard's Second Rule.

Auto Rickshaw Quote - 2

I have a (bad/good) habit of reading "The Quotes" written behind Auto Rickshaws. Some quotes are good, some are bad, some are ugly. But occasionally some quotes will shock you.

This particular quote which read yesterday, when I saw waiting for a GREEN Signal, shocked me.

The Quote is (in tamil):

"Dear Two Wheeler Friend, Please check your SIDE STAND".

Life and Time

Shiva sits in silent meditation on a snowy Himalayan mountain top. Suddenly there is a great sound. Nandi, Shiva’s bull, gets alarmed and asks, ‘Where is the sound coming from?’

Shiva says, ‘Ravana is born.’

After a while there is another frightening sound. Nandi asks, ‘Now, what is this sound?’

Shiva laughs and says, ‘Ravana has now been slain.’

This is surely a Zen-style story. This is the story of Life from the perspective of Time.

Apache Wedding Prayer

After a longtime, I'm back to my posting. As I have completed read "Wizard's First Rule", I started with "Eye of the World" from Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" Series. But I couldn't help reading "Stone of Tears" the second novel of "Sword of Truth". I just read one of its chapter. I promised myself that I will be completing "Eye of the World" before "Stone of Tears" because EOW is lying idle for a longtime, I bought it nearly 4 years back. I just want to finish it.

Apache Wedding Prayer:

Now you will feel no rain,
For each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
For each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there is no more loneliness,
For each of you will be companion to the other.
Now you are two bodies,
But there is one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place,
To enter into the days of your togetherness.
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.

You are what you are ....

You are what you are, nothing more, nothing less. - Terry Goodkind.

I have completed reading "Wizard's First Rule" by Terry Goodkind. I read about 300 pages yesterday to make it complete. The story for interesting. It is a very good read for all Fantasy Book lovers.

So, what is "Wizard's First Rule" ? It is "People are Stupid". People will hear what they want to hear, whether it is truth or lie.

I'm a lover of Fantasy Books. I don't know when it started. Since my childhood days I used to watch lot of Magic Movies, and read books of that kind. I still remember reading "Vikram and Vettal" cartoons in Thinamalar Daily.

Terry Goodkind is a fan of Ayn Rand. You can see it in his writings. I have lot of Series in the pipeline.

Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth
Terry Brooks - Sword of Shannara
Robert Jordan - Eye of the Dragon
Erick Steven - Malzan Empire series

For A Diary Page

"How I'm going to cross the mountain ?" asked the disciple.
"One step at a time." said the Master.

When you view the life as a whole, the life may seems to be a big beast or a very long journey. This view might send a lighting into your spine, it may shock you. To make it easy, Norman Vincent Peale, the author of Positive Thinking, advises to live in Day-Tight compartment.

When we have a Big Goal, a Big Dream, as it is big, it might seem IMPOSSIBLE. But when you break it, it becomes I M Possible. Step by Step, one step at a time, start living the dream. Don't worry about the BIG GOAL, start concentrating on the break-ups.

Think about the Small Step, however small, which you can take toward the realization of the BIG GOAL.

Always keep a Daily Journal, near your bedside. So that before you sleep, fill it up with the Day's Accomplishments, however small. You don't need to worry about the Life's Big Challenges. All you need to think about is, how to make My One Diary Page as much beautiful just for this Day(Just Today).

There is only TODAY, no TOMORROW. TOMORROW Never Comes.

Sword of Truth

I'm currently Reading "Wizard's First Rule" by Terry Goodkind. It is the first book in the series of "Sword of Truth". It has lot of good quotes in it.

"You are what you are, neither more nor less" - a great quote. It can be said in many ways:
* We are what we think we are.
* Cognito Ergo Sum (I think wherefore I'm, I'm what I think)

Perception is very important aspect in life. Every one has their own unique perception. A Mouse will have a Perception of a Cat, which is entirely different from the Cat's own. So, Watch your Perception, it might be a delusion.

Ahana Bookshop

I was been to Ahana Bookshop in Velachery near to Aquatic Complex, Velachery. It is a shopper's paradise for book lovers. You will get 20% discount for most of the books. It is one of the main difference between Ahana and Land Mark Bookshop.

Land Mark is very vast in its collection of books, literally you name it, you will mostly get it in Land Mark. Ahana is not so, it has very limited books (mostly best sellers). So, My Book shopping algorithm is changed, First check the availability of the book in Ahana if I'm lucky I will get it with 20% discount, Else move on to Land Mark.

The Spark

I just read an article posted on an Orkut Community. It was speech given by a well known author Chetan Bhagat. In it he talks about how to keep up and nurture the spark in everyone. The Spark he refers to is nothing but Enthusiasm.

3 Things That will Nurture the Spark:

=> Reasonable Goals
=> Balance in Life
=> Don't take life too seriously

4 Things That could put off the Spark:

=> Disappointment
=> Frustration
=> Unfairness
=> Loneliness of purpose (Isolation)

My French Class

I have started attending French Classes from Monday (28-July-08). I'm attending it for my own self interest. The classes are conducted in my company (CARC) by professor Shobana Varma from Alliance Francaise.

For the Past one week I have learned:
* Greetings in French (Bonjour, Au revoir, a demaine, Je vous en prie)
* Days of the Weeks
* Months of the Year
* Number (0-69)

There are few French phrases we often use without knowing its French Origin. Here is the List:

* Tete-a-tete
* L'oeuf (in tennis - love-all, it means egg)
* RSVP (Repondez s'il vous plait)

I like learning French.

Knowledge Portfolio

Your Knowledge Portfolio is very important to your career, so keep updating it. In this hot industry, the only thing that is not changing is 'Change'. Change is everywhere in IT industry, so it should be one of our goal to be up-to-date with the change.

Here are some of the tips from the Book, The Pragmatic Programmer:

=> Learn at least one new language every year. Different languages solve the same problems in different ways. By learning several different approaches, you can help broaden your thinking and avoid getting stuck in a rut. Additionally, learning many languages is far easier now, thanks to the wealth of freely available software on the Internet. (You can start by learning Haskell/Lisp/Prolog)

=> Read a technical book each quarter. Bookstores are full of technical books on interesting topics related to your current project. Once you're in the habit, read a book a month. After you've mastered the technologies you're currently using, branch out and study some that don't relate to your project. (Stalin, this is not for you)

=> Read nontechnical books, too. It is important to remember that computers are used by people—people whose needs you are trying to satisfy. Don't forget the human side of the equation. (You can start by reading GEB, Infinity and Mind, Books by Roger Penrose, Richard Meyers, Steven Pinker) (Stalin, this also is not for you)

=> Take classes. Look for interesting courses at your local community college or university, or perhaps at the next trade show that comes to town.

=> Participate in local user groups. Don't just go and listen, but actively participate. Isolation can be deadly to your career; find out what people are working on outside of your company.

=> Experiment with different environments. If you've worked only in Windows, play with Unix at home (the freely available Linux is perfect for this). If you've used only makefiles and an editor, try an IDE, and vice versa.

=> Stay current. Subscribe to trade magazines and other journals. Choose some that cover technology different from that of your current project.

=> Get wired. Want to know the ins and outs of a new language or other technology? Newsgroups are a great way to find out what experiences other people are having with it, the particular jargon they use, and so on. Surf the Web for papers, commercial sites, and any other sources of information you can find.

Meditate Online

Meditation is for me is:

The Path of enlightenment
Cannot be charted or measured:
Highest of the high,
Vast beyond limit,
Deepest of the deep,
Profound beyond fathoming,
Big enough to contain
Heaven and earth,
Small enough to enter
An infinitesimal point,
Thus it is called the Path

- Records of the Lanka

I usually Meditate in the office for 5 to 10 minutes mostly after lunch(I don't have heavy lunch these days). I sit in my chair and play Tibetan Bells Music and open the Online Meditation Link. This has a good effect on me. Try it if you have time.

Last week, I have completed reading Sabriel by Grath Nix. I like that book, I have also some of my already read book into Shelfari(bookshelf plug-in in the left).

Anger and Love (No Limits...)

While a man was polishing his new car, his 4 yr old son picked stone & scratched lines on the side of the car.

In anger, the man took the child's hand & hit it many times, not realizing he was using a wrench.

At the hospital, the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures. When the child say his father.... with painful eyes he asked "Dad when will my fingers grow back?"

Man was so hurt and speechless. He went back to car and kicked it a lot of times. Devastated by his own actions...... sitting in front of that car he looked at the scratches, child had written "LOVE YOU DAD".

The next day that man committed suicide...

Anger and Love has no limits, so let the river of life flow in Limits so that this fresh water stream is never scattered.

Thanks to Srini.

The Taste of Biriyani

Biryani is one of the dish I like most since my childhood. My mom don't know how to cook Biryani. But my kids have better luck than me, My wife knows how to cook Biryani. She makes one of the Best Biryani, I have ever tasted.

In the early days of my marriage life, My Wife don't know cooking at all. I usually didn't liked her cooking, that's the reason why we often used to dine outside. After 2 years of our married life, She is improved her cooking skills drastically. Thanks to My mother-in-law and Chef Dhamodaran (Achi Masala samayal Programme).

Now-a-days, I like her non-veg dishes than any other restaurant's. Don't forget to ask for "Chicken Biryani" when anyone visit my home.

The Little Prince

Today, I have completed reading "The Little Prince" written by aviator Antoine de Saint Exupéry. It is one of the short children book. I love this book next to Alice in the wonderland and Looking through the Glass.

The book comes under the category of novella(a short novel). It is children book but with lot of insights for adults.

The novella is about a Little Prince, who lives in a Asteroid name B612, which has 3 volcanoes and 1 Flowering plant.

I recommend it for all. Enjoy reading.

Here is an introduction in WiKi Link

Epictetus: The Art of Living

Two days back, I completed reading a translation of Epictetus. Epictetus is a 3rd century Stoic philosopher. He was born as a slave and later he became a Stoic philospher. The book is very small and it's very good to read.

Jacob anna and Santo, it is a highly recommended book. I want you to enjoy it.

Here is a classic translation of "The Enchiridion"

Here is some of his quotes:(collected from http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/e/epictetus.html)

First learn the meaning of what you say, and then speak.

First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.

God has entrusted me with myself.

He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.

If evil be spoken of you and it be true, correct yourself, if it be a lie, laugh at it.

If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.

It is impossible to begin to learn that which one thinks one already knows.

Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them.

No greater thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig. If you tell me that you desire a fig, I answer you that there must be time. Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen.

No man is free who is not master of himself.

Practice yourself, for heaven's sake in little things, and then proceed to greater.

Silence is safer than speech.

Whenever you are angry, be assured that it is not only a present evil, but that you have increased a habit.

Paradoxical Commandments

The Paradoxical Commandments by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

My Physics Interest

One of the subject which I love during my school days is Physics. And One of the Subject I love during my college days is Maths (esp. Calculus). But If you ask me what is my score in these subjects in my 10th and +2, I'm a very below average performer.

When I ask myself why I was not able to perform much in my school days, I could say that its the teachers fault in my school. I thinks it is the same fate with every school in India.

Why do one LEARN ? For me "To Learn is to understand." But in schools esp. in India "To Learn" is to "To Memorize." This is the same reason, why I'm able to shine better in Computer Science, because I Understand What I learn. I was able score good marks passed with distinction in my B.Sc (Computer Science) and M.C.A. by understanding.

As a Science subject, Physics is more interesting to me than Chemistry. My interest are more into Astronomy (yes, I know how to identify Big Dipper and Little Dipper. I learned it from a Russian Books (Ursa Major, Ursa Minor)) and Relativity Theory. Here are some of the Good Links for understanding Physics (which I browsed today):

C/C++ If statement

Lately, I was been reading C/C++ Coding Styles. It talks about parenthesis-ing, spacing, alignment, etc...

I also recommends some common software practices, such as putting the numerical constant first in the comparison statements like if, while, for and ?:

for example:

if (1000 < stack_size) {
...
}

while (10 != num) {
...
}

for (int i=0; 20 == value; ++i) {
...
}

Why does it emphasize this rule ? It will help you to avoid ambiguous assignments in the conditional statements.

A common mistake in for loop
=====================

for(int i=0;i < X; i++)

whenever we write "for" loop we are tend to use the post-fix operator ++ instead of pre-fix ++. First one need to understand what is the difference between i++ and ++i, and when to use what.

i++ is more complex and takes more clock cycles than ++i. So please make it a habit to use ++i instead of i++, this may make your code a little bit faster.

My Birthday and Pat & Stan

I have done my birthday shopping last weekend. Tomorrow (21-may) is my 30th birthday. hmm...

I feel good,

Miles to go before I sleep,
Miles to go before I sleep ....

My kid Rohan and myself love watching The Owl and Pat&Stan from JetX Channel. The imaginative work involved in these cartoons are very cool. I have a Pat&Stan singing "In the jungle" in my blog.

I'm making steady progress in my goals and objectives in my life. It is very slow, but very steady.

1. I'm doing meditation on the weekends
2. Solved 1 ACM (2062) last week
3. Reading The C++ Programming Language

Make "make" work for you

Make - tool to control the compilation and creation of executables. I was hacking into this tool for quite sometime. I feel "make" is good for all the linux/unix c/c++ programmers.

Here is a simple Tutorial of Make:

source file (helloworld.c)
========
#include ...
int main() {
using namespace std;

cout<<"hello world\n"; return 0;
}
simple makefile(gnumakefile/makefile)
===========
helloworld: helloworld.c
TAB g++ -o helloworld helloworld.c

TAB - is important, otherwise gnumake will prompt for error.

command
=======
make TARGET

make helloworld

Example 2
========

/* sum.c */

int sum(int a, int b) {
return a+b;
}

/* diff.c */

int diff(int a, int b) {
return a-b;
}

/* main.c */

int main() {
...
c=sum(20,30);
...
d=diff(30,23);
...
}

/* Make file */

CC = g++ /* which compiler*/
CFLAGS = -Wall -g -ansi /* compiler flags */

sum.o: sum.c
$(CC) $(CFLAGS) -c -o $@ $<
diff.o: diff.c
$(CC) $(CFLAGS) -c -o $@ $<
main: sum.o diff.o main.c
$(CC) $(CFLAGS) -o $@ $^
clean:
-rm core *.o main
Special Tags
=========
$@ -- current target name
$LT -- First name of the prerequisite
$^ -- List of all prerequisite
$* -- List of all prerequisite (without prefix)

So, dudes, start using make. It is cool, it makes life a lot easier for c/c++ programmers.

My Study on Virtue

We use some words without knowing what is the exact meaning of it. One such word is Virtue, What does it mean ?

Virtue - it stands for Moral Excellence of a person.

The four cardinal (hinge) virtues are
1. Justice
2. Courage
3. Wisdom
4. Moderation

The four classic Western cardinal virtues are:
1. Temperance - Self discipline
2. Prudence - Wisdom
3. Fortitude - Courage
4. Justice

Buddhist practice as outlined in the Noble Eightfold Path can be regarded as a progressive list of virtues.

1. Right Viewpoint - Realizing the Four Noble Truths
2. Right Values - Commitment to mental and ethical growth in moderation
3. Right Speech - One speaks in a non hurtful, not exaggerated, truthful way
4. Right Actions - Wholesome action, avoiding action that would do harm
5. Right Livelihood - One's job does not harm in any way oneself or others; directly or indirectly
6. Right Effort - One makes an effort to improve
7. Right Mindfulness - Mental ability to see things for what they are with clear consciousness
8. Right Meditation - State where one reaches enlightenment and the ego has disappeared

The Four Noble Truth:

1. The Nature of Suffering
2. Suffering's Origin
3. Suffering's Cessation
4. The Way Leading to the Cessation of Suffering - (It is the Noble Eightfold Path)

Capital Vices

1. Pride or Vanity — an excessive love of self
2. Avarice (covetousness, Greed) — a desire to possess more than one has need
3. Lust — excessive sexual desire. "lust detracts from true love".
4. Wrath or Anger — feelings of hatred, revenge or even denial, as well as punitive desires outside of justice
5. Gluttony — overindulgence in food, drink or intoxicants, or misplaced desire of food as a pleasure for its sensuality
6. Envy or jealousy - resentment of others for their possessions "Love of one's own good perverted to a desire to deprive other men of theirs")
7. Sloth or Laziness - idleness and wastefulness of time allotted. Laziness is condemned because others have to work harder and useful work can not get done.

Breaking and Building

Again, It has happened, I have broken the trust of my wife. Why is it happening like this, my relationship with my wife is growing to heavens. But all of a sudden, it is broken. This is happening for the 3rd time in my marriage life.

Now, I have to start from the first. I have to start building my trust from the ground level. It is a Himalayan Task, it requires lot of Patience. Everything is because of my troubled Childhood.

But, whatever happens, her trust will return to me. Because "I Love Her" so much.

I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own image.

ID, Purse and Mobile

"ID, Purse and Mobile" - I hear this phrase daily. My wife used to ask me everyday "Have you taken ID, Purse and Mobile ?". She knows I'm an absent-minded professional. But there is a philosophy behind it.. I'm not a philosopher or something like that, but it is just a metaphor.

ID (Identity Card), signifies your Identity in this world (Your Self). Purse, of course, is your financial status, how do you manage your money(mere earning is no enough, one should know how to manage it) . Mobile is the communication quality, how you communicate with the outside world.

Your world revolves around these 3 important things.

LOL...

A PSALM OF LIFE

A PSALM OF LIFE

WHAT THE HEART OF THE YOUNG MAN
SAID TO THE PSALMIST

TELL me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream ! —
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real ! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal ;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way ;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle !
Be a hero in the strife !

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant !
Let the dead Past bury its dead !
Act,— act in the living Present !
Heart within, and God o'erhead !

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time ;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate ;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

"Auto" Expeience...

Today, while I'm coming to office, I saw a quote written on back on an Auto Rickshaw.

"Money, youthfulness, beauty ... are temporary things"

"Simplicity, patience, honesty ... will move you forward in life"

Great insight .....

One Minute Manager

For the past few days, I'm reading "One Minute Manager balances Life & Work".

The four Parameters (Stress Moderators) are:

1. Autonomy : The availability of many choices that give good control in life
2. Connectedness : Strong positive relationship at home, at work and in the community
3. Perspective: The direction, purpose and passion about what one is doing.
4. Tone: The feeling about the body, energy level, physical well being and appearance.

If you lack in any one of these parameters, It will seriously affect the other parameters(domino effect).

Mind, Intellect & Ego

For the Past 2 Weeks, I'm taking Meditation Classes. These are some of the things which I learned from my Guru.

Introduction

In vedic times yogis investigated the deepest nature of human being. They developed a coherent filosophy on human extistence on the material, psychological and spiritual levels. The vedic model of human psychology consists of five concentric circles or koshas representing body, mind, ego, intellect, and self. The model introduces basic concepts for the understanding of human consciousness and various branches of yoga.

Body

The cerebrospinal system is the first part of the organism to be developed after conception. From it the entire bodily form comes out. This system is a great generator of electrical energy that is constantly supplied to the internal organs by a network of nerves that serve as connectors. All the cells in the body are kept alive by a flow of energy (prana). Nerves connect the brain and spine with the five sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin), and the five work organs (anus, genitals, legs, hands, vocal chords). The functiong of the entire human body is controlled by the cerebrospinal system, and the psychic centers are located in it.

Mind

The combination of brain, breath, nerves, sense organs, and work organs functions as a unit inside the body which is working with the mind. Mind is the tool of consciousness that enables perception through the senses. Mind uses brain to process the signals that are coming in through the senses, but mind is not a product from the brain. This is illustrated by organisms that have no real brain but still they have a mind that enables them to sense changes in the environment.

Mind is very active and associative, it can jump from present to past and from one situation to another. If you have tried to sit and remain silent inside you have experienced that many thoughts arose no matter how much you tried to be without them. These thoughts sprout from the activity of the mind. The activity of the mind is closely related with the pattern of breathing. The science of controlling breath is known as pranayama, a branch of Hatha Yoga. By practicing pranayama, the breath becomes calm, images do not disturb the mind, and the internal dialogue stops

Ego

Ego is the illusion that I exist as a separate individual being. Ego is the one which assumes the responsibility for the body and identifies with the body. When the body breathes, he says, "I am breathing". Ego takes a name, and becomes Mr. such and such and all social relations are acted out by ego. Whereas mind is very daring, ego is very much afraid for death. Whenever any problem comes to the body, ego becomes very alert and remains in the body. And the more there is danger of existence, the more strong the ego becomes. There are stories of children who were completely neglected and left behind. They developed into some kind of chivalrous fighting heroes, and they also became masters in certain subjects and people of great intelligence. Most of the time, only for survival of their ego, they had to struggle, and they learned from their struggle how to be strong. This way, ego is the one that creates strength. All strength that I have comes from my ego. This part of the ego which gives this strength is called will.

Modern school has become a training place for creating more and more ego, because there is competition all the time. Who does it first? Who is the best? Ego always tries to say, "I am better than you", "I am holier than you". In ancient days they had an education system that did not let the ego grow beyond a particular limit. The child had to go and live with the family of a teacher as a member of the family (gurukul). The wife of the teacher was responsible for providing all food, and nobody was allowed to bring other food. And parents were not allowed to bring gifts in order to treat all pupils equal, and make them feel that everyone is equal.

Intellect

Intellect is the tool of consciousness that contains knowledge that is accumulated in this live and in past life, and by seven previous generations as well. Intellect carries with it the past and the present, and also speculates about the future. Intellect helps ego with advice and information but the final decision comes from ego. Ego can say, "I like it" and although intellect may disapprove ego may decide "O.k., I don't believe that this is right, but I don´t want to follow all these rules and regulations, I'll break the law". If intellect is too much dominating then information in books is considered more important than own experience.

Mind and Intellect serve Ego

When ego is the king in the body, intellect is the prime-minister, and mind is the public relation officer, roaming here and there, making contacts, gathering information. Most of the time only mind is dominant. But sometimes ego is also very dominant. And intellect is only in the beginning, when you start, at that time it comes and tries to show you how you go. But after that, mostly it is the mind which takes the lead.

Self

There is a divine spark of consciousness in each of us, the innermost center of the 5 koshas. This divine spark or self is in bliss, untouched by any of the events that happening around. Animals, plants, and even objects, have such a spark in them. In deep sleep and in samadhi, mind, ego and intellect are inactive. Therefore, deep sleep and samadhi are very similar, however, in deep sleep we are not conscious of anything whereas in samadhi consciousness remains during the absence of mind, intellect and ego. The self likes to enjoy the drama of life. It is because of unfulfilled desires of ego that the combination of self, intellect, ego and mind incarnate over and over again, until the ultimate desire to merge with god is fulfilled. Then all individuality, including the individual self, is dissolved into the cosmic consciousness.
